Heart Health

Good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, LDL or HDL cholesterol--what's the difference anyway? The whole subject sometimes sounds so technical and maybe even confusing!

So we'll try and make it easy to understand. Too much LDL (bad) cholesterol means a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, and too little HDL (good) cholesterol can mean the same thing.

You need to know the difference between good and bad cholesterol, what each one does, and why it's important to correct LDL and HDL cholesterol numbers that are out of balance.

Total Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the bloodstream of all cells. It's a very important substance necessary for building new cells, insulating nerves and producing hormones.

Cholesterol comes from the foods you eat and is also produced by the liver. Too much however, can be responsible for the build up of that waxy substance on the inside of your arteries, like a pipe that gets clogged. If it completely clogs, no blood can flow past the obstruction. Depending on where this blockage is it can result in a heart attack, or stroke, or impaired circulation to your legs and feet.

The total cholesterol test is measured by a blood test.

Your total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL.

About 42 million adults in this country have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Lowering your cholesterol is an important part of lowering your risk of stroke, heart attack, or impaired circulation to the lower extremities.

Good (HDL) Cholesterol
The HDL cholesterol actually carries cholesterol away from your arteries and cells to the liver, helping eliminate cholesterol from the system. So a low HDL cholesterol means less efficiency in carrying unwanted cholesterol out of the blood stream, another risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

You should have a Good ( HDL) cholesterol level above 40 mg/dL in men, and preferably above 50 mg/dL in women.

Bad (LDL) Cholesterol
If your LDL cholesterol is too high it can build up as a waxy substance in the walls of arteries and over time cause the blockage in the arteries we just talked about. Keep the bad (LDL) cholesterol down and the risk of cardiovascular disease is lowered.

We like to see the Bad (LDL) cholesterol level below 100 mgm/dL

Symptoms of High Cholesterol
Here's the catch--there really aren't any symptoms just due to high cholesterol alone. Symptoms relate to the
complications of having high cholesterol, such as a heart attack, stroke, or impaired circulation in your feet and legs. By the time these occur high cholesterol has been around in your system clogging up your arteries for years.

The picture below shows what plaque build-up on the blood vessel that supplies the heart looks like.

Here's what the plaque buildup does. The blood vessel narrows and may eventually close, shutting off blood supply to a portion of the heart muscle. That muscle dies, causing a "heart attack".

If the blood vessel is narrow but not completely closed some oxygen supply will get through, but not enough to let the heart function normally. This can cause the condition known as "angina". Heart pain comes on with exercise, stress, even heavy meals. It is often the precursor to a complete closure of the blood vessel and a "heart attack".

Treatment of High Cholesterol
Many doctors reach for the prescription pad as the first step. But unless your cholesterol level is dangerously high, it is best to try the natural approach first. This stepped treatment approach just makes sense.

All medications have potential side effects and statin drugs are no exception. About 20% of those on statin experience side effects. Some can be serious, such as abnormal liver function tests, muscle pains, severe muscle weakness, plus some others. Many have to stop taking their statin medications because of side effects.

You Can Lower Your Cholesterol By:
  1. Eating a balanced diet. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, fish, and lean meats. Drink alcohol only in moderation, and STOP SMOKING.

  2. Exercising regularly at least 20 - 30 minutes 5 times weekly. Brisk walking is a great exercise and is just as good as an expensive gym. Winter-time mall walking is an alternative to walking outdoors when weather conditions are poor or temperatures are extreme.

  3. Add Bios Life to your preventative program. Click Here for Bios Life Complete . Bios Life is a natural supplement that lowers total cholesterol by raising the HDL (good) cholesterol and lowering the LDL (bad) cholesterol. It also works to lower triglycerides, another risk factor in cardiovascular disease. But that's not all! It coats the lining of the intestine and slows the absorption of carbohydrates. This helps stabilize blood sugar, an added plus for diabetics. Many find that taking Bios Life twice daily before the two biggest meals of the day also helps them reduce their weight. Bios Life is listed in the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) and is the only clinically proven natural supplement on the market today.

Have your baseline cholesterol level checked, start your program of sensible diet and Bios Life, then have your cholesterol re-checked in 6-10 weeks. Be sure and discuss the results with your Health Care Provider.
